Paul was picturing the believer as a competitor in a spiritual contest. There the laurel wreath was placed on his head as a symbol of victory. The victor of a given event who participated according the rules was led by the judge to the platform called the bema. 2Ģ Timothy 2:5 Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. The word “Bema” was taken from Isthmian games where the contestants would compete for the prize under the careful scrutiny of judges who would make sure that every rule of the contest was obeyed. The Tribunal of Christ deals with rewards for obedience, crowns, and the call of the Bride to the Marriage of the Lamb which occurs in the Father’s house. If anyone’s work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved yet it will be like an escape through fire. If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward.
